The TCT-DP test is used to assess creative thinking understood in terms of Klaus K. Urban's componential model of creativity. This model assumes the existence of six groups of creativity components: divergent thinking, general competencies, specific knowledge and specific skills, task involvement, motives, and tolerance for ambiguity. These components form a functional system, they operate in mutual interaction, and none of them is sufficient on its own to initiate the creative process or is solely responsible for it.
The task for the examinee is to complete a drawing, which has a square frame and six graphic elements as a simple starting point. The examinee can draw whatever he/she wants and however he/she wants: everything is allowed and correct. After completing the drawing, the person is asked to give it a title.
The test has two versions: A and B. The examinee performs both versions of the test or only one of them.
The raw score obtained by the examinee is the sum of all points assigned to the drawing. The criteria considered in the evaluation primarily include: fluency, originality, ability to elaborate, ability to synthesize (produce a whole), nonconformity, willingness to take risks, a sense of humor and emotional involvement.
Materials:
- Kit (manual, 25 test sheet and recording sheet for version A, 25 test sheet and recording sheet for version B)
- Manual
- Test sheets and recording sheet for version A (25 of each)
- Test sheets and recording sheet for version B (25 of each)
For screening (creativity training; as a selective instrument in recruitment to schools or vocations), in individual diagnosis (enriched diagnosis of intellect; prediction of success in endeavors requiring creative functioning) and for research (studies of the nature, development and determinants of creativity and cross-cultural studies).
Reliability
High concurrent reliability and moderate internal consistency of both versions.
Validity
Established concurrent validity – TCT-DP scores discriminate between occupational groups selected for high versus low level of the measured trait. Established construct validity for adolescents – in both age groups the TCT-DP scores correlate with creative behaviour as manifest in verbal material and with school grades and fluid intelligence in 18-19-year-olds; they do not correlate with these two dimensions in 14–15-year-olds.
Norms
The TCT-DP was normalised for adolescents in two age groups: 14–15 and 18–19. Means and standard deviations for various adult groups are also provided.
